關於馴鹿

        關於馴鹿，亞洲最有名的應該是喬巴。



        漫畫裡面總是寫著Chopa；事實上這是Chopper的日本發音。



        我一直覺得chop是印章，所以chopper來自喬巴奔走的蹄聲，啪啪啪啪。不過，翻字典的話chopper不是砍，就是擊。



        另外很有名的馴鹿就是幫聖誕老人拉雪橇的那一群。就像白雪公主的七個小矮人，聖誕老人的馴鹿也有自己的名字。Dasher、Dancer、Prancer、Vixen、Comet、Cupid、Donder，以及Blitzen。



        Dash是急速奔跑，dasher因此是指跑者。Dancer是舞者，prance是馬躍步的樣子；vixen是雌狐、comet彗星、cupid邱比特、donder有些人說是donner，但意思都是thunder雷，前者為荷蘭文，後者為德文。Blitzen是挪威文的閃電或閃光。



        這是原本在拉雪橇的那一群。



        1939年的時候，美國某家百貨公司找人寫了一本小故事書免費送給來訪的小朋友。提到一隻紅鼻子的馴鹿Rudolph，魯道夫。原本的故事裡面Rudolph是自己居住的馴鹿，有一年聖誕老人因為天候惡劣，送禮物送到Rudolph家的時候發現他的紅鼻子，而邀請他幫忙領隊拉雪橇。



        這個故事大受歡迎，並被改編成兒歌和電視卡通片。



        只不過在這個改編版裡面，Rudolph成了從小跟其他馴鹿一起長大卻一直受到歧視的小可憐。        

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer 

had a very shiny nose. 

And if you ever saw him, 

you would even say it glows. 



All of the other reindeer 

used to laugh and call him names. 

They never let poor Rudolph 

join in any reindeer games. 



Then one foggy Christmas Eve 

Santa came to say: 

"Rudolph with your nose so bright, 

won't you guide my sleigh tonight?" 



Then all the reindeer loved him 

as they shouted out with glee, 

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, 

you'll go down in history!
